Yesterday BSO officials announced the dismaying news that Andris Nelsons, the new Music Director of the BSO, suffered a concussion last weekend as a result of a collision with a door at his home near Bayreuth. His doctors have recommended total rest, and he will be unable to conduct the Verdi Requiem as scheduled on Saturday, July 27. There has been some discussion as to whether his wife, Kristīne Opolais, the soprano scheduled to sing in the Requiem, will be able to leave his bedside, but so far she intends to appear at Tanglewood to sing and to stand in for her husband in the glad-handing events also arranged for that weekend.
In addition, as reported by the BSO, two other artists scheduled for this weekend have been forced to withdraw from programs due to illness. Conductor/pianist Christoph Eschenbach (scheduled to perform on Friday, July 26 and Sunday, July 28) has an inner ear infection and currently cannot travel by plane; and bass Ferruccio Furlanetto (scheduled to perform on Saturday, July 27) has a bad cold and is not able to sing the bass-baritone role in this week’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem. As a result of these cancellations, the following artists have graciously agreed to participate in this weekend’s programs:
Edo de Waart will replace Mr. Eschenbach at the podium on Friday, July 26. Garrick Ohlsson will replace Mr. Eschenbach as piano soloist, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 in B-flat, K.595 in place of the originally scheduled Piano Concerto No. 12 in A, K.414. The rest of the program remains unchanged.
Conductor Carlo Montanaro will step in for Andris Nelsons for the performance of the Verdi Requiem on Saturday, July 27. Bass-baritone Eric Owens will replace Mr. Furlanetto.
On Sunday, July 28, conductor Ludovic Morlot will replace Mr. Eschenbach to lead the BSO in the originally scheduled program featuring pianist Garrick Ohlsson.
